Revolutionizing Everyday Utility: The Concave Convex Bucket

Multi-functionality Meets Innovation in a Simple Household Item

The Concave Convex bucket was inspired by the everyday problems faced when using traditional buckets. Water spilling due to shaky hands and the discomfort of bending down to wash small items in a low water level were the primary issues the design team sought to address. The solution? Incorporating silica gel into the bucket's design to maximize its utility.

The unique properties of silica gel offer two additional functions to the bucket. When filled with water, the water level lowers, preventing spillage and reducing water waste. When turned upside down, the bucket transforms into a basin, providing a convenient solution for washing small items.

The bucket's main body is crafted from PC material, while the bottom is made of silica gel. This combination allows the bottom to be pushed up or down freely, adapting to the user's needs. The bucket measures 320mm in diameter at the top, 280mm at the bottom, and stands 450mm high.

The design process, which took place at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, Zhongshan Institute, spanned from September to December 2016. The team conducted extensive research and experiments to ensure the silica gel's properties were effectively utilized. The result is a multi-purpose bucket that not only prevents water from splashing but can also be used from both ends, aligning with market trends and demands.

The design of the Concave Convex bucket posed several challenges, particularly in maximizing the utilization of traditional buckets. However, the team's innovative approach to applying the features and forms of silica gel has resulted in a product that significantly enhances the bucket's functionality. The design has been recognized with a Silver A' Furniture Design Award in 2017, a testament to its creativity and professional excellence.
